U-M Joins Dartmouth, Cornell and University of Washington in Receiving NIMH Funding for Training Grant

Congratulations to Frederic C. Blow, Ph.D. and colleagues for the approval of their collaborative National Institute of Mental Health training grant application (NIMH T32), "Training Geriatric Mental Health Services Researchers," by the NIMH council (including the approval to exceed the 500k annual limit and to fund two MD or PhD fellows per site).

This unique training program is a collaborative effort across three institutions and has been active for the last five years.

It includes the following researchers and their respective Universities:

Stephen Bartels (Dartmouth), Marty Bruce (Cornell), and Jurgen Unutzer (University of Washington).

Researchers from the University of Michigan were invited to join this collaborative training program in the competing renewal, so now there will be a total of four sites.

Special thanks to the following individuals for their willingness and commitment to participate in the grant application:

Helen Kales, Alan Mellow, John McCarthy, Amy Kilbourne, Scott Kim, Kris Barry, Kara Zivin (Psychiatry); Ken Langa and John Piette (Internal Medicine); Myra Kim (Biostatistics); Jane Banaszak-Holl and Woody Neighbors (School of Public Health); and Lou Burgio (School of Social Work).

Additional thanks to Janet Kavanagh who was instrumental in pulling together content for the submission.

Due to the University of Michigan being a new site, candidates have not been established for the training grant this year.

If anyone has a potential candidate (MD or PhD), please let Dr. Blow know so he can begin having dialogues with potential candidates for next year.

Dr. Blow is a Professor and Director of Mental Health Services Outcomes & Translation Section for the Department of Psychiatry and the Director National Serious Mental Illness Treatment Research & Evaluation Center for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
