Marcus to receive award for championing child health

Sheila M. Marcus, M.D., is one of three "outstanding champions of children's health" who

will be honored by the nonprofit organization Michigan's Children at the "Heroes at Sunrise" awards breakfast on May 17.

In naming the criteria for Marcus' nomination, the organization cites her career research focus on mental health at U-M, specifically in understanding and explaining depression in pregnancy, children and adolescents. It notes her roles as a clinical professor, section chief for child and adolescent psychiatry, and co-director of the Women's Perinatal Psychiatry Program. Michigan's Children also cites Marcus' work on several research projects involving child and maternal outcomes, as well as her involvement in care and supportive interventions for children and spouses of soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan with the U-M Depression Center's Welcome Back Veterans Initiative.

"Heroes at Sunrise" celebrates individuals, businesses and organizations whose community involvement and contributions have positively impacted the lives of children and families in Michigan. The honorees, through their concerns, interests and actions, have demonstrated a genuine commitment to the welfare of the children of Michigan.

Michigan's Children was formed in 1992 by business and philanthropic leaders as a multi-issue organization operating independently of government funds as a voice for children and their families. For more about Michigan's Children and the awards breakfast, visit www.michiganschildren.org.
