The Michigan Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve recently honored the Department of Psychiatry with its Patriot Award, which recognizes employers who support a strong National Guard and Reserve force. Employers qualify for recognition when they practice leadership and personnel policies that support employee participation in the Guard and Reserve. The Department was nominated by Thomas Fluent, M.D., a Captain in the United States Navy/Medical Corps with 21 years combined active duty and reserve service. Fluent served 10 years on active duty before leaving active duty to come to U-M in 1998. Since joining the reserves, he has been mobilized to active duty three times since September 11, 2001, most recently to Afghanistan in 2010.
