Optimizing Personalized Feedback Data Visualizations for Digital Interventions

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death, in part because few individuals access evidence-based treatments such as self-regulatory strategies for managing stress and urges to smoke. Mobile health (mHealth) personalized feedback data visualizations may increase engagement by helping individuals understand cessation progress and identify which strategies work best and when. Yet, little is known about individuals’ needs and preferences for this type of feedback during a quit attempt.

In this DIGIT-MI session, Dr. Libby Benson will present findings from interactive co-design sessions (n=24). Findings will inform a suite of personalized feedback visualizations and future intervention optimization research examining whether and when prompting individuals to view feedback increases intervention engagement and reduces smoking. This work has broader implications for personalized feedback design across a variety of health behavior domains.
