Professor
U-M Primary Appointment
Biological Chemistry
Michael Uhler, Ph.D., investigates neuronal signal transduction and its role in neurological and psychiatric disorders. His lab develops human and mouse stem cell–derived neuronal models to explore fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling pathways and identify genes influencing neuronal function—particularly in major depression—while characterizing novel proteins that regulate synaptic activity. As Co‑Director of Michigan’s Human Stem Cell & Gene Editing Core, he leads cutting-edge work in gene expression regulation in human neurons. A seasoned mentor, Dr. Uhler has trained dozens of students and postdocs, earning recognition as a “distinguished mentor” for his hands‑on guidance and genuine investment in trainees’ success. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Oregon (1982) and joined U‑M in 1988, where he built a prolific program in neuronal signaling and stem cell models before retiring.
