Women and Depression
Mood Disorders in Women
pregnancy | postpartum | menstrual | menopause
Particular attention has been placed on women's mood disorders in the Depression Center. A depression team consisting of psychiatrists, nursing staff, psychologists and social workers is in place to identify and treat depression as it presents through the female lifespan. Special emphasis on depression in childbearing women has been long established, and will be expanded to include specific treatments for depression related to the menstrual cycle, and peri-menopause. Providers span a wide range of clinical expertise and include those with experience in adolescence and adolescent suicide, pregnancy and postpartum depression, menstrual disorders, peri-menopause and menopause, couples and family treatments, treatments of trauma and abuse victims, treatments to support role transitions, phase of life changes, professional crises, and grief and loss. Treatment modalities include:
- Individual and group treatments
- pharmacotherapy
- cognitive behavioral treatment
- interpersonal treatment
- and general treatments
Most substance abuse services are provided at the University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Service, though consultations are available in the Depression Center.
