Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my appointments last?

New visits may last up to three hours, depending upon the clinic. Return visit appointments range from 20 to 45 minutes of face-to-face time with your clinician.

Will my case be assigned to a medical trainee?

Training tomorrow’s healthcare professionals is part of our mission. You can expect that medical residents and trainees from multiple disciplines will join your treatment team to provide exceptional care. All patient care is delivered under the supervision of a faculty psychologist or psychiatrist.

What if I need a prescription refill between appointments?

Please contact our Call Center at 734-764-0231. Refill requests are processed in one to two business days.

What do I need to know about my insurance when seeking treatment?

Some mental health benefits are still handled separately from other medical benefits. An insurance screening will occur at scheduling and patient financial counselors will check your specific benefits.

Where can I find out more about my diagnosis and the medications and other treatment options available to me?

We encourage you to visit the FRIENDS Depression Education and Resource Center, located at the east end of the Rachel Upjohn Building atrium for printed materials and online resources about mental health disorders. Additional information is available through the Depression Center’s online patient “toolkit,” found at www.depressiontoolkit.org.

How can I find out about resources and programs that might help me and my family?

The U-M Depression Center and Ambulatory Psychiatry offer workshops and support groups for patients and families to help everyone learn more about risk factors, treatment options, communications skills, healthy living and more. Click here to see a current list of programs.
