Everyone needs to be on the lookout for warning signs of teen suicide
(01/02/07) On the surface, Chase Edwards appeared to be a bright and happy boy. But his parents didn't realize that his problems sleeping and his irritability were more than just adolescent moodiness until he took his own life at the age of 12. With the hope of saving other young, bright lives, the Edwards family recently helped pass a law that will encourage school systems in Michigan to train school personnel in some of the signs of clinical depression in youth.

$2M gift to Depression Ctr will fund professorship & research
(08/30/06) An Ann Arbor businessman who watched his wife struggle with depression has given $2 million to support the research of a University of Michigan Depression Center scientist whose work may help explain the diseases roots in the brain. The gift adds to the $2 million previously given by the same donor for a new building that will open this fall to house the Center and other U-M mental health programs.

2/3 of depressed pregnant women go untreated
(08/14/06) The majority of pregnant women who have full-blown major depression aren't getting any treatment for the condition, and neither are most pregnant women who have signs of milder depression or depression risk, a new University of Michigan Depression Center study finds.

Walk benefits suicide & depression prevention

Prechter Fund becomes part of U-M
(04/27/04) Joining forces to fight one of the least understood and most devastating mental illnesses, the U-M Health System today announced that the Heinz C. Prechter Fund for Manic Depression will transfer its assets to become the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund within the Health System.

Depression Center receives $10M gift
(04/19/04) The U-M Depression Center has received a $10 million gift to support the construction of the nation's first building devoted primarily to research, clinical care, education, and community and public policy programs for depression. Pending approval by the U-M Board of Regents, it will be called the Rachel Upjohn Building.

Depression-in-the-workplace survey released
(03/22/04) Though American companies believe they're effectively addressing depression among their employees, workers with depression still feel that acknowledging their condition openly could damage their careers, a new survey finds. The study, released today by the U-M Depression Center and the National Mental Health Association, shows that depression treatment and coverage in the workplace has a long way to go.

(02/19/04) As many as 15 percent of college-age young people may have depression. A conference on March 9 and 10 at the U-M will explore the many issues surrounding the detection and treatment of depressive disorders in young people, putting special focus on stress, sleep and alcohol.

U-M Health System hosts depression screening event on Oct. 9
(09/26/03) On Sunday, Oct. 9, the U-M Depression Center, along with M-CARE and the Michigan Center for Diagnosis and Referral, will offer free, confidential mental health screenings to the community as part of National Depression Screening Day. The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at 2101 Commonwealth Ave, Suite C, located off Plymouth Rd. in Ann Arbor.

Walking into the light:
(09/15/03) On Sept. 20, the U-M Depression Center and the Ann Arbor AFSP will host the second annual "Into the Light" walk. The purpose of the walk is to encourage members of the community to raise awareness about the prevalence of depression, its link to suicide, and the treatment that is available.

Stereotypes prevail in media coverage of depression
(08/25/03) The media's coverage of depression has changed dramatically in the age of Prozac, a new U-M study finds. Articles are now far more likely to depict women's mental issues in relation to gender-stereotyped roles, such as marriage and motherhood, rather than in medical terms. But descriptions of depression in men have not shifted in the same way.
