University of Michigan’s Greden Joins National Board of Directors for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Dr. John Greden, executive director of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center has joined the national board of directors for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).  He will serve as vice president of the board.

"Dr. Greden brings proven leadership skills, strong scientific knowledge and a great passion for this important cause.  After years of serving on AFSP’s scientific advisory committee, we are fortunate to have him join our board as we work to make suicide prevention a national priority," said Robert Gebbia, executive director for AFSP.

“Every year in the United States we lose more than 32,000 people to suicide.  This is a tragedy that must be addressed in the same way that other severe public health problems such as AIDS, cancer and diabetes are being addressed," said Dr. Greden.  "It is a great honor to be elected vice president of this remarkable organization.”

In addition to being founder and executive director of the Depression Center, Dr. Greden is the Rachel Upjohn Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, and Research Professor in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute.  He has published more than 260 scientific papers, and has been acknowledged in various listings such as the “Top 100 Psychiatrists” in America.  He is a devoted educator, and has delivered more than 300 invited presentations on depression and other topics nationally and internationally.

Each board member is directed to serve on at least one committee.  Greden will continue to serve on the Scientific Council.

The board is responsible for setting policy, shaping strategic directions, approving the budget, financial reports and other initiatives as well as helping to raise needed resources for the Foundation.  The board is comprised of leading scientists, business and community leaders and individuals who have been personally touched by mental illness and/or suicide.  Currently the board has 30 members.
