Outreach and Education
Depression is a common illness that remains one of the most misunderstood, under-diagnosed and under-treated ailments affecting our society. When diagnosed and treated early, the majority of those with depressive illnesses are effectively treated and able to maintain wellness. However, stigma and misinformation remain devastating barriers and prevent far too many from seeking effective treatment.
Effective patient and public education empowers patients, families and communities to break through these barriers. The U-M Depression Center serves as a source of reliable patient, family and public education as part of our multi-service approach to care, which includes:
- Special and regularly-scheduled community events throughout the year
- Multiple outreach programs designed to educate the public and targeted populations about topics related to depression and bipolar disorder
- Continuing education for care providers on the most up-to-date science and treatment options.
- The Friends Depression Education and Resource Center, which houses a wide array of materials on mental health topics including a lending library, free brochures, and computer access to online health information.
