Artwork by Ruth Gilmore Langs

Bask (detail), 2006

Ruth Gilmore Langs was commissioned to create a body of work that would lend an uplifting aesthetic to the interior of the Rachel Upjohn Building, which houses the U-M Depression Center and Ambulatory Psychiatry Programs.  These bright, joyful paintings are on display on the building’s Garden Level and in a number of other public spaces.

At a ceremony to mark the opening of the Rachel Upjohn Building in 2006, Depression Center Executive Director John Greden remarked, “Ruth’s art complements the architecture beautifully, and we are grateful to her for her ability to fully embrace the vision for the new center and to capture the mood we wanted so perfectly.”

Langs currently works out of her studio on the Huron River in Ann Arbor. She has worked in the oil medium for nearly 30 years and has studied for over 10 years with the renowned teacher Kwok Wai Lau, a third-generation Bauhaus artist and member of the teaching faculty at the International Art School of Hong Kong.  Langs’ bold artwork contributes to the healing environment that the Rachel Upjohn Building was intended to bring to its patients, staff, and visitors. Visit the artist's website for more information about Ruth Langs and her work.
