Author and Depression Center National Advisory Board Member Andrew Solomon discussed his book Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity at a fundraising event at the Michigan League Ballroom in Ann Arbor, Mich. on April 12, 2013. The book tells the stories of parents who find deep meaning through the challenges involved in raising children who are profoundly different from themselves.

Solomon discusses the emotional strains experienced by many of the parents and children featured in his book, as well as the intense feelings he uncovered in himself while interviewing these families.

Solomon talks about his experiences as a mental health activist and a member of the Depression Center’s National Advisory Board.

Solomon describes how many of the families described in his book decided to talk about often painful stories as a way to help others and feel less isolated in their experience.
