Child and Adolescent Groups

The following groups are to function as entry level groups for parents and patients who would benefit from therapeutic interventions that can be started immediately versus waiting until an individual therapist is available.  In some cases, these group sessions may be sufficient without need for individual therapy.  In other cases, the patient and/or parent may require individual therapy.

Parent Training Groups:

Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Autism, Asperger’s disorder and PDD-NOS): Behavior Strategies.
Enrollment is open and rotating.  All ages.
Parents must be referred by Child and Adolescent Psychiatry staff members.

Parents of Children (Aged 4 -11 years old) with ADHD: Behavior Strategies.
Enrollment is open and rotating.
Parents must be referred by Child and Adolescent Psychiatry staff members.

Patient Groups:

CBT Group for Teens (aged 12-18 years) Diagnosed with Depression.
Enrollment is open and rotating.
Parents must be referred by Child and Adolescent Psychiatry staff members.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Groups  (DBT)

Youth ages 15 - 22  (parents/family included when possible)

A series of weekly group sessions, conducted in class-like format which will include teaching, practicing and refining skills for:

  • teaching effective, positive relationship skills
  • reducing misery and improving ability to manage stess
  • decreasing harmful reactions to overwhelming emotions
  • learning and refining skills to change hurtful thinking and behavior patterns

Asperger Social Skills Group

Social Skills Group for Children with High-Functioning Autism, Aspergers and Related Disorders

A thorough & comprehensive social skills group directed towards overcoming the challenges of social success for children living with autism spectrum disorders.  The group is based upon the Super Skills curriculum written by Judith Coucouvanis and published by Autism Asperger Publishing Company. Children are matched with peers of similar age and functioning ability.  Start Date:  Summer 2008 when group of matched peers is found.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Social Skills Group

Social Skills Group for Children with High-Functioning Autism, Aspergers and PDD,NOS

This social skills group is a tailored group that focuses on providing children with a full repertoire of social skills training necessary to strengthen their interpersonal relationships.  This group uses a psychosocial model in teaching children social skills in the group setting, as well as working with parents/guardians in assisting their child in implementing social skills in various environmental settings. Start Date: Beginning of 2008 when group of matched peers is found.  8-10 children per group.
