Workshops & Support Groups

Family Education workshops offer patients and their families a chance to learn about depression and bipolar disorder, to gather information about risk factors, treatments, family impact, and healthy ways of communicating with one another.

Family Education Workshops**

A two-hour workshop that offers patients and families the opportunity to learn about depression and bipolar illness while gathering information about risk factors, treatments, impact  on families and healthy ways of communicating with each other.

Group Leaders: Katharene Schoof, LMSW and Laura Nitzberg, LMSW
Start Date: Ongoing
Day/Time: First Wednesday of every month from 6-8 p.m. at the Rachel Upjohn Building in room 1742A & B on the garden level.
Place: Depression Center and Ambulatory Psychiatry facility, in the Rachel Upjohn Building, 4250 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48109 meeting room number is listed above, stop at reception desk if you need help finding the room -map-
Insurance Coverage: N/A
Cost: Free, however advance registration is required. Register by calling Susan Wonnacott at 734-764-0250.

Due to space limitations, priority is given to families and patients currently being seen in the U-M Depression Center and U-M Department of Psychiatry. All adolescent and adult family members are welcome to attend.

**Attending a group meeting means that you will meet others with your circumstances and condition. Each member of the group will be asked to be respectful of confidentiality and will sign a statement saying they will not disclose any confidential information.

Military Family Support Forum

A free monthly program for family members of OEF/OIF service members or veterans (spouses, significant others, children, parents, relatives). Offers military families information, support, and an opportunity to connect with other families. The forum is moderated by professionals and includes a program for children ages 0-17.

Day/Time: One Saturday a month, from 12-2 p.m.. See below for dates and topics.
Place: Depression Center and Ambulatory Psychiatry facility, in the Rachel Upjohn Building, 4250 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48109 -map-
Cost: Free.

Lunch is provided.

Depression and Bipolar Illness Support Groups

Group A: for Adults with Depression and Bipolar Illness - room 1922
Group B: for Adolescents and College Aged Persons with Depression and Bipolar Illness (call to see if this group is running) - room 1444
Group C: for Family Members of Persons with Depression and Bipolar Illness - room 1924

These three groups are offering opportunities to share idea for coping, link with community resources, develop a support network, learn about depression and bipolar illness, as well as discuss issues of stigma.

Group Leaders: post-graduate social work fellows will be the facilitators of the groups in conjunction with Katharene Schoof, LMSW and Laura Nitzberg, LMSW supervising the program.

Day/Time: 7:00-8:15 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Wed. of every month
