Eating Disorders and Depression

Dr. David S. Rosen

An individual’s eating habits are controlled by many different factors, including appetite, food availability, and family, peer, and cultural influences. Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, eating disorders are not caused by a failure of will or behavior; rather, they are real, treatable medical illnesses, which frequently co-occur with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders.

To provide greater understanding of the connections between eating disorders and depression, the University of Michigan Depression Center and the Ann Arbor Public Library will present a Bright Nights community forum entitled, “Eating Disorders and Depression,” to be held Tuesday, March 6, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch (corner of S. Fifth Ave. and William).

Dr. David S. Rosen, Professor of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases and Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, will present a brief overview of the latest research on eating disorders. This will be followed by questions from the audience and a specialist panel discussion with Judith Banker, MA, LLP, FAED, Director, Center for Eating Disorders; Barb Blue, MSN, RN, CPNP, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, U-M Department of Psychiatry; Anita Kumar-Gill, M.D., Adjunct Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry, U-M Medical School; Amy Pershing, LMSW, ACSW, Clinical Director, The Center for Eating Disorders; and Kendra Shih, M.D., Adjunct Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry, U-M Medical School.

Bright Nights is open to the public and there is no charge for attendance. For more information, please contact Trish Meyer, 763-7495, or meyerpa@umich.edu.
