With winter upon us and the festive season packed into boxes and memories, many dread the coming months of short gloomy days and the seemingly endless cloudy weeks ahead until spring guides us into summer. It happens every year. This is Seasonal Affective Disorder, or just plain “SAD”.
The University of Michigan Depression Center is countering the “Winter Blues” with the kickoff of an educational series, Bright Nights, co-sponsored by the Depression Center and the Ann Arbor District Library. The new Bright Nights series of public forums provides an opportunity for community members to obtain up-to-date information on a variety of topics related to depression. The quarterly forums, scheduled for Jan. 11, March 29, May 24, and Oct. 25, will allow for discussion and Q & A between audience members and expert panelists.

The first Bright Nights forum will be held on January 11, 2006, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch, 343 S. Fifth Avenue at the corner of William and Fifth. The forum will begin with a 20-minute presentation on SAD by Dr. Melvin McInnis from the Depression Center, which will touch on recent research in this field, but focus primarily on treatment options for SAD (including light therapy). Following the presentation, a panel of experts from the U-M Depression Center will take questions from the audience. Panel members include Dr. John Greden, Dr. Randy Nesse, and Dr. McInnis. Dr. Tom Zelnik, a practicing psychiatrist in the Ann Arbor community with many years experience in treating SAD with light therapy, will also join the panel. Refreshments will be served. Panel members will be available for questions until the conclusion of the program.
