About 40 million adults in America suffer from anxiety disorders. Effective treatments, including medications and specific types of psychotherapy, are available. However, anxiety disorders very frequently co-occur with depression, and the anxiety often cannot be successfully treated unless the depression is treated as well.
To provide greater understanding of panic, anxiety, phobic fear and their connections to depression, the University of Michigan Depression Center and the Ann Arbor Public Library will present a Bright Nights community forum entitled, “Anxiety Disorders: Panic and Phobias” on Tuesday, September 25th, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch (corner of S. Fifth Ave. and William). Bright Nights is open to the public and there is no charge for attendance.
James Abelson, M.D., Ph.D., a professor in the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry and director of the Depression Center’s Anxiety Disorders Program, will present a brief overview of research findings on panic, anxiety, phobias, and depression. This will be followed by questions from the audience and a discussion with panelists from the U-M Depression Center including Joe Himle, Ph.D., M.S.W., associate director of the Anxiety Disorders Program, and Pam Schweitzer, R.N., N.P., M.S., a psychiatric nurse practitioner in the Anxiety Disorders Program. They will be joined by Laura Nisenson, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist with a private practice in Ann Arbor.
