A 2003 study conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan Depression Center suggested that as many as one in five pregnant women may experience symptoms of depression during the childbearing years. Many are symptomatic during their pregnancies and symptoms may continue during their children’s early years.

It is therefore very important that women and their clinicians understand the importance of recognizing and treating depression during childbearing, and that they are made aware of intervention strategies to help support both mother and child.

To provide greater understanding of the risks for depression during childbearing years, and how a mother’s depression may effect her child, the University of Michigan Depression Center and the Ann Arbor District Library will present a Bright Nights community forum entitled, “Depression During Childbearing Years: Strategies for Prevention, Intervention, and Raising Resilient Children” on Tuesday, January 20, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the downtown Ann Arbor District Library (corner of S. Fifth Ave. and William).

The presenters will help women to understand the complex relations that may exist between maternal depressive symptoms and childrens' wellbeing. Novel early interventions to improve maternal depression, parenting skills, foster healthy attachment, and maximize a healthy developmental path for children will be explored.

Kate Rosenblum, Ph.D., a clinical developmental psychologist and Assistant Research Scientist, U-M Center for Human Growth and Development and faculty member of the U-M Comprehensive Depression Center will present a brief overview of the latest research on perinatal depression, including strategies for prevention, intervention, and raising resilient children.

This will be followed by questions from the audience and a discussion with panelists from the U-M Depression Center, including Heather A. Flynn, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Director, Adult Psychotherapy Services, Department of Psychiatry, University of Michigan Medical School; Sheila Marcus, MD, Clinical Associate Professor and Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Section, University of Michigan Medical School; and Maria Muzik, M.D., Co-director, Women's Perinatal Clinic and Parent-Infant-Program, Depression Center and Trauma, Stress and Anxiety Research Group. They will be joined by Beverly Davidson, LMSW, Maternal Infant Health Services, Washtenaw Community Public Health Department.

Bright Nights is open to the public and there is no charge for attendance. For more information, please contact Trish Meyer, 763-7495.
