Autism and related Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) affect an estimated 3.4 out of every 1,000 children ages 3-10. In addition, studies have shown that more people with ASD experience anxiety and depression than people who do not have ASD. However, early diagnosis and intervention can have a dramatic impact on reducing symptoms and increasing a child's ability to grow and learn new skills.

To provide greater understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders and their connections to depression, the University of Michigan Depression Center and the Ann Arbor Public Library will present a Bright Nights community forum entitled, “Depression in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Diagnosis & Treatment” on Tuesday, September 23rd, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch (corner of S. Fifth Ave. and William).

Mohammad Ghaziuddin, M.D., Director, University of Michigan ASD Program, and Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, will present a brief overview of the latest research on diagnosis and treatment of adolescents with ASD and depression. This will be followed by questions from the audience and a discussion with panelists from the U-M Depression Center, including Judith Coucouvanis, MA, APRN, BC and SunShine Mills, LMSW, both of whom work in the ASD Program. They will be joined by Pamela Sohoni, MD, Clinical Director of Children & Adolescent Psychiatric Services at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Bright Nights is open to the public and there is no charge for attendance. For more information contact Trish Meyer, 763-7495, or meyerpa@umich.edu.
